Ray Stevenson, the Irish actor, known for his roles in films such as "Punisher: War Zone," "King Arthur," the "Thor" franchise, and TV shows like HBO’s "Rome" and the upcoming "Ahsoka" series, passed away in Italy on Sunday, as confirmed by his publicist. He was 58 years old. Unfortunately, no information regarding the cause of his death is currently available.
Born on May 25, 1964, in Northern Ireland, Stevenson initially made his mark in the television industry during the 1990s. However, it was in the 2000s that he started landing action-packed roles in Hollywood films. One of his breakthrough roles came in Antoine Fuqua's 2004 adventure movie "King Arthur," where he portrayed Dagonet, one of the Knights of the Round Table. Dagonet's character heroically sacrificed himself in battle to aid Arthur (Clive Owen) and his brotherhood of warriors.
In 2008, Stevenson achieved further recognition when he starred as the titular mercenary, also known as Frank Castle, in the Marvel film "Punisher: War Zone." Lionsgate distributed the movie in North America before Disney acquired the rights to the Marvel universe and later reintroduced the character in the Netflix series "Daredevil." Stevenson was the third actor to portray the Punisher on screen, following Dolph Lundgren in a straight-to-video release in 1989 and Thomas Jane in the R-rated "Punisher" of 2004. Despite being a PG-13 reboot, "War Zone" underperformed at the box office, earning only $10.1 million from its $35 million budget. Jon Bernthal subsequently took on the role in Netflix's "Daredevil" and "The Punisher" series.
Throughout the 2010s, Stevenson appeared in various action movies, including "The Book of Eli," "G.I. Joe: Retaliation," "The Three Musketeers," as well as the Marvel's "Thor" franchise and Lionsgate's "Divergent" adaptation. In his recurring Marvel role, Stevenson portrayed the Asgardian hero Volstagg, one of the Warriors Three, who were allies to Chris Hemsworth's Thor. He appeared in the first three "Thor" movies before meeting his demise at the hands of Cate Blanchett's villainous character, Hela, in "Thor: Ragnarok." In the "Divergent" series, Stevenson portrayed Marcus Eaton, the leader of the Abnegation faction and the father of Four (Theo James).
Recently, Stevenson made an appearance in the critically acclaimed and Oscar-nominated Tollywood blockbuster "RRR" as the antagonist Governor Scott Buxton. Additionally, he will be seen in the upcoming Disney+ "Star Wars" series "Ahsoka" this summer, portraying a Jedi named Baylan Skoll who succumbs to the dark side and becomes an ally to the sinister Grand Admiral Thrawn. Prior to this role, Stevenson lent his voice to the character Gar Saxon in both "Star Wars Rebels" and "Star Wars: The Clone Wars."
On the small screen, Stevenson garnered attention for his portrayal of Titus Pullo in the HBO historical drama series "Rome" from 2005 to 2007. He played the role of a Roman soldier alongside Kevin McKidd as Lucius Vorenus, and their characters witnessed significant historical events as the Roman Empire began to take shape. "Rome" received critical acclaim and was honored with seven Emmy Awards during its two-season run.
Stevenson's talent extended to other television projects as well. He portrayed Ukrainian mobster Isaak Sirko in Season 7 of Showtime's "Dexter," embodied the infamous pirate Blackbeard in Starz' "Black Sails" series, and portrayed the sailor Othere in Season 6 of "Vikings."
In addition to his notable appearances, Stevenson will be remembered posthumously for his roles in the films "1242: Gateway to the West" and "Cassino in Ischia."
Ray Stevenson's contributions to the world of film and television have left a lasting impact. His versatility as an actor allowed him to portray diverse characters, earning him recognition and praise throughout his career. He will be remembered for his remarkable talent and the indelible mark he left on the entertainment industry.
