The Houston Texans Make Big Move, Trade Up for Alabama's Will Anderson Jr. at No. 3 in NFL Draft.
The Houston Texans made waves in the 2023 NFL Draft by trading up from the No. 2 overall pick to the No. 3 pick. The Texans selected Ohio State quarterback CJ Stroud with the second overall pick, and minutes later, they made a trade with the Arizona Cardinals for the third pick to select Alabama pass rusher Will Anderson Jr.
The Cardinals had been looking to trade out of the third overall spot, and the Texans seized the opportunity. They gave up the 12th pick, the 33rd pick (the second pick in the second round), and a first and third rounder in 2024 to acquire the third pick and 105th overall from the Cardinals, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.
This move by the Texans is rare, making them just the third team in the common draft era to make two picks in the top three. The 1992 Indianapolis Colts and 2000 Washington are the only other teams to accomplish this feat, according to ESPN Stats & Info.
Anderson has been on the NFL radar since his freshman season at Alabama, where he had a tremendous year. He followed it up by winning the Bronko Nagurski Trophy, given to the top defensive player in college football, two seasons in a row. Despite some speculation in the days leading up to the draft, the Texans were clearly enamored with Anderson's production, choosing him over Tyree Wilson, who was also considered a top defensive prospect.
New Texans coach DeMeco Ryans now has a foundational star for his defense, as well as a potential franchise quarterback in Stroud. This is an exciting time for Texans fans, who have endured some lean seasons in recent years. With Anderson's talent and the team's new acquisitions, the Texans could be poised for a turnaround in the near future.
